Who is Charles Doudelet?
Charles Doudelet (1861 - 1938), also known as Karel Doudelet, was a Flemish painter, graphic artist, art critic, bookplate designer and illustrator. As a young child, he moved to Ghent, where he qualified at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and later took classes with Constantin Meunier in Antwerp.
After his studies, Doudelet developed within symbolist art and won several prizes and scholarships. He achieved his fame mainly as a book illustrator with his distinctive woodcuts. A meeting in 1892 with poet Maurice Maeterlinck proved crucial for his career; he illustrated Maeterlinck's poetry collections and designed sets for his plays.
In 1900, Doudelet was commissioned by the Belgian government to research the history of books and printing. This study took him to major libraries across Europe, with a special focus on the top Florentine libraries. He stayed in Italy until 1924, where he not only worked as an artist and illustrator, but also taught at a drama school and became artistic director of the film studio 'Il Rinascimento.'
On his return to Ghent, re-entry was difficult. His prolonged absence had cost him his regulars, and interest in symbolism had now faded. Nevertheless, he was highly regarded as a teacher at the Royal School of Drama Oscar de Gruyter.
