Who is Victor Horta?

Victor Horta (1861 - 1947) was a Belgian architect and a pioneer of art nouveau. Together with Henry Van de Velde, he is considered one of the most important representatives of this style. Around 1885, Horta started his own practice and designed his first buildings in Ghent.

His breakthrough came with the Hotel Tassel (1893), a house that stood out not only for its ornate, organic motifs, but also for its innovative use of light and space, such as level changes and glass domes.

The splendour of some Art Nouveau buildings, such as the Van Eetvelde House, shows the link with the colonial riches of the time, including exotic woods from Congo. Despite the loss of some of Horta's masterpieces, such as the Volkshuis and the Innovation department store, many of his works are still accessible, such as the Palais des Beaux Arts (BOZAR), the Horta Museum and the Autrique House. Four of his properties in Brussels, including his own house and studio, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and remain a testament to his influential contribution to architecture.
