Who is Jan Toorop?

Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop, also known as Jean Theodor Toorop (1858 - 1928). He was one of the most influential Dutch artists of the period 1880-1910. His early work began in an impressionist style, after which he further developed into a symbolist painter via pointillism.

Toorop also worked as a portrait artist and designed ceramics, advertising posters and book covers, making a major contribution to Dutch art nouveau.

In his last 20 years of life, Toorop's work was heavily influenced by Roman Catholic symbolism, which is visible in his strong line work and deeply symbolic character, especially in his posters and stained-glass designs.

His influence lives on, both in the art world and in his family: he was the father of artist Charley Toorop and grandfather of artists Edgar and John Fernhout. Toorop's work is still celebrated for the way he managed to meaningfully combine aesthetics and content.
