Who is Hector Guimard?

Hector Guimard (1867 - 1942) was a French architect and is considered the most important representative of art nouveau in France. Guimard studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and was inspired by the works of Victor Horta.

His style characterised by organic lines and undulating shapes. His best-known work the iconic entrances to the Paris metro network.

Although Guimard developed a unique and recognisable style, he remained a loner within the art-nouveau movement. He founded no school and had no direct followers, leading to a long period of relative obscurity.

This lack of wider imitation was in stark contrast to the lushness and complexity of his architectural and decorative designs. His work combined aesthetic splendour with technical innovation, but was only fully rediscovered and appreciated during the 20th century.
 
Guimard's creations, ranging from private homes to his famous underground entrances, show an unmistakable sense of dynamism and movement. Despite his later emigration to New York and a more modest conclusion to his career, his influence remains visible in the legacy of art nouveau.
