Who is Gustav Klimt?
Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918) was an influential Austrian symbolist painter, muralist and draughtsman, considered one of the most prominent figures of the Vienna Secession. For some time, he held the position of president of this avant-garde art movement, which focused on innovation and the promotion of modern art.
Klimt is best known for his later works, in which he applied his characteristic "decorative ornamentalism", often with the use of gold leaf, which lends his paintings a special brilliance and depth. His oeuvre is steeped in suggestive-erotic symbolism, often giving his art an intimate and mysterious atmosphere.
The painter gained particular fame for his female portraits and allegorical works, in which he created an ideal representation of female beauty and sensuality. Besides his portraits, Klimt also created a considerable number of landscapes.
Klimt's work originated during an artistic heyday in belle époque Vienna and is often associated with the art nouveau and art nouveau movements. His art reflects the tensions of the time between conservationism and the drive for innovation, and his oeuvre is still recognised as exemplifying this dynamic. Klimt's influence on modern art is undeniable, and his unique style continues to inspire many artists to this day.
